John Kordosh

    Writer

John Kordosh began writing for "Creem" magazine in 1980; his first published piece was a review of the then-defunct CBS comedy "Green Acres." As a freelancer, he interviewed many prominent musicians of the 1980s, and eventually joined the editorial staff under Sue Whitall, Dave DiMartino, and Bill Holdship. He also wrote for Musician and BAM. Something of a humorist, Kordosh wrote a weekly blog for Yahoo Music called "Ramed," combining still pictures from music videos with witty captions.

  • Florida Georgia Line, Framed

Every now and again, I like to feature country music in Framed, as this is an insanely democratic blog. The duo consists of Brian Kelley (from Florida) and Tyler Hubbard (from Georgia) and are currently on their “Anything Goes” tour – a tour that will last well into October.

  • Fifth Harmony, Framed

Our video this week is “Worth It,” which also features Kid Ink, the tattooed rapper whose first three LPs have all been Top 20.

  • The Beatles, Framed

Spectacular news, readers! This week, instead of humdrum contemporary stars, I’m featuring the second greatest rock group of all time, the Beatles! It’s super-duper good! Everyone knows their story, of course. How they met in India, went on Monday Night Football, and kicked Pete Best out of the band. Oh, and they killed Stuart Sutcliffe, too. It’s a Paul McCartney composition called “Another Girl,” which he wrote in a bathroom in Tunisia (actually true.) At the time, McCartney was living with Jane Asher but seeing other women.   Said McCartney: “I remember John very much envying me.

  • Rihanna, Framed

So I went up to the In-N-Out Burger for a quick lunch, and there was Rihanna.  We run into each other in the screwiest places! “Hey, Ree,” I quipped, because I quip. “Hell, Ree, you can call me Al,” I requipped, referencing a Paul Simon song and knowing Ree knew that Paul Simon was just in Framed.

  • Pitbull & Kesha, Framed

From time to time, writing Framed wears me down a bit. I mean, I’m under contract to writea dozen captions a week. And they have to be really good, too! Sure, I get paid crazy good money, but how many captions are there in any one person’s head?

  • Paul Simon, Framed

Simon had been the important half of Simon & Garfunkel, the ‘60s folk/pop act that had eight Top 10 songs and won nine Grammys. It included this week’s video, “Me & Julio,” which was shot back in the Queens neighborhood where Simon and Garfunkel met and includes celebs like Big Daddy Kane, John Madden and the great Mickey Mantle.

  • Taylor Swift, Framed

This week I’m featuring Taylor Swift, the biggest star of her generation and one of the best-selling musicians of all time. Taylor’s won seven Grammy Awards, twelve Billboard Music Awards, eleven Country Music Association Awards, seven Academy of Country Music Awards and one Brit Award.  All of this at the age of 25. This week’s video is “Blank Space,” a tune from her most recent album, 1989.

  • Sam Smith, Framed

A minor brouhaha impacted Sam’s career back in January, when it was revealed that Smith would have to pay royalties to Tom Petty on his Top 5 tune, “Stay With Me,” which sounds quite a bit like Petty’s own “I Won’t Back Down,” minus the headband, of course.

  • Meghan Trainor, Framed

The e-zine Salon called it the worst song of 2015 and “a literal garbage pile of horrible retrograde gender stereotypes.” Wow! Harsh words! Retrograde stereotypes! I’m not sure it’s exactly the worst song of the year — we’ve got a lot of year left and One Direction must be recording something — but, yeah, it’s pretty bad.

  • Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding, Framed

The vid’s already got more than 100 million views on Vevo, most of them mine, and may be the single greatest video filmed on October 20, 2014.

  • Iggy Azalea, Framed

This week, I’m especially delighted to bring in the great Iggy Azalea and her recently-released video for “Trouble,” another big hit from Reclassified, the reissue of her debut LP, The New Classic.

  • Common & John Legend, Framed

I was watching the Academy Awards a couple of Sundays ago, and thought  Common and John Legend stole the show with their live rendition of “Glory,” from the film, Selma. The affecting ballad lent a strong voice to the movie and the awards show, and it was no surprise when it took home the Oscar for Best Original Song. I decided that “Glory” had to be in Framed right away, because I’ve got my hand on the pulse of pop culture.  And also on a bottle of Michelob Ultra.  What the hell, I’ve got two hands. John Legend (real name: John Mythological) is no stranger to awards, having won nine Grammys and one Golden Globe.  Common’s also brought home a couple of Grammys and three BET Hip Hop Awards.  Now, in the wake of their Oscar win, there’s talk of the duo collaborating on an album.

  • Kelly Clarkson, Framed

It seems like we’ve been watching American Idol half of forever, doesn’t it? Of all the winners of American Idol, the best was still the first: Kelly Clarkson.

  • Maroon 5, Framed

This week our super special guest stars are Maroon 5, the California band that’s sold over 15 million LPs in America alone, and over 100 million singles worldwide! I tried to find out how they got their name, but — and I’m being frank! — I sort of don’t care.

  • Eminem, Framed

I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, where I began my career writing about music. You’ve got Motown, the 1984 Tigers, the 1967 riots, a couple bands I can’t remember right now, and some other stuff.  And songs!  There are a surprisingly large number of songs about Detroit.  We all know Bobby Bare’s “Detroit City,” but there’s tons more!  How about Bowie’s “Panic in Detroit”? This week’s video may well be the definitive Detroit song, though. It’s Eminem, bringing it strong with the incredible “Detroit vs. Everybody.” And it not only features Em, it’s got Trick-Trick, Dej Loaf , Big Sean , Royce Da 5’9” and Danny Brown in it, too! Hey, any pals of Eminem’s are pals of ours, too.

  • Framed: Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga

I’m going to be writing really funny captions that will make you shoot milk out of your nose, if you happen to be drinking milk at the time.  Really, though, any liquid will do.

  • The Band Perry, Framed

In honor of last week's CMA Awards -- and, boy, didn't (fill in name because we're writing this a few days before the CMAs) bring down the house? You damn right (he/she/they) did! In the spirit of the awards, this week we're welcoming The Band Perry to Framed.

  • Paul McCartney, Framed

Word is that Paul McCartney's new album, the cleverly-titled New, is quite good. And judging by this week's video, "Queenie Eye," they may be right. Queenie Eye, evidently, is a game that Paul and his childhood Liverpudlian friends played. Thus, the song's lyrics aren't tremendously sophisticated: Queenie eye queenie eye, who's got the ball? I [...]

  • Avril Lavigne, Framed

Everyone likes Avril Lavigne, but few like her more than Framed. This is the fourth time we've featured one of her vids here, and it's always a good time all around. This week we've got "Let Me Go," a Vevo premiere featuring Avril and her new husband Chad Kroeger of Nickleback. The track is slated [...]

  • One Republic, Framed

This week's guest artists, the Colorado band One Republic, first caught the public's fancy with their 2007 hit, "Apologize." Since then, their work has sold steadily if not spectacularly, although their 2013 album, Native, hit #4 in the U.S. This week's video, "Counting Stars," is from that album, and the video is sort of weird. [...]
