Meghan Trainor, Framed

Meghan Trainor’s father says that, years ago, she “thought she was one of the chubby girls who would never be an artist.” And you know who you are, disappointed chubby girls.

But, boy, was she ever wrong. It turns out, in fact,  that she was one of those chubby girls who would not only be an artist, she’d have several Top 5 hits before she was 21. Heck, “All About That Bass” hit #1 in 58 countries and was #1 in the U.S. for an amazing eight weeks in a row.

So you’d think Meghan would be sitting on top of the world, huh? Not so fast, readers! Her third single — we’ve got the video this week — is “Dear Future Husband,” and it hasn’t exactly been a world-beater. The e-zine Salon called it the worst song of 2015 and “a literal garbage pile of horrible retrograde gender stereotypes.”

Wow! Harsh words! Retrograde stereotypes!

I’m not sure it’s exactly the worst song of the year — we’ve got a lot of year left and One Direction must be recording something — but, yeah, it’s pretty bad. As is the video. Although I found it hard to look at, you may feel differently. And, if not, there’s always the captions, ever a balm for troubled eyes.

And, as an aside to Ms. Trainor: hang in there, doll. You’re off to a great start, so don’t get bummed out by those know-nothing critics. Once I learned you were actually born and raised in Nantucket, Mass., in fact, I decided to write a limerick in honor of your career. I hope you like it, memorize it, and show it to all your friends!

There once was girl from Nantucket
With a hit and it seemed like good luck, it
Made her say “My career
Is based on what you hear”
And the audience said “Well, then ______________!”
