Sam Smith, Framed

There’s no point in being coy about the greatness of this week’s guest artist in Framed, Sam Smith. He’s the British fellow who took home four Grammys this year, for best Pop Vocal Album, Record and Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. A considerable sweep, one might say.

A minor brouhaha impacted Sam’s career back in January, when it was revealed that Smith would have to pay royalties to Tom Petty on his Top 5 tune, “Stay With Me,” which sounds quite a bit like Petty’s own “I Won’t Back Down,” minus the headband, of course. In a statement to Billboard, Sam’s representative said, “Not previously familiar with the 1989 Petty/Lynne song, the writers of ‘Stay With Me’ listened to I Won’t Back Down’ and acknowledged the similarity.

“Although the likeness was a complete coincidence, all involved came to an immediate and amicable agreement in which Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne are now credited as co-writers of ‘Stay With Me.’”

Wanting to avoid having Petty seize my own measly paycheck, I’m going with “I’m Not The Only One” this week. A sad song of a betrayed relationship, its most outstanding moment is when “unavailable” is rhymed with “unattainable.” That’s some sweet stuff right there.

The vid, which features Dianna Agron of Glee fame, takes us through a bride’s reaction to her husband’s cheating ways. It’s great, as are the captions, which – as always! – have precious little to do with anything!

See you next week!
