Yahoo Autos One of Michael Schumacher's Winningest Ferraris Is Headed to Auction
For an entire generation, this is a defining Formula 1 car. Ferrari F2003-GA, chassis number 229, a car Michael Schumacher took to three poles and five wins. It's one of the most successful individual Schumi chassis and the most successful F2003. RM Sotheby's will auction it in Geneva next month, and we can't think of many more special cars on sale right now.
While 2003 came in the middle of Ferrari/Schumacher's dominance, it wasn't the blowout that previous year was, with Kimi Raikkonen finishing just two points behind Schumacher. Still, Schumi had six wins from sixteen races and two additional podiums. Ferrari actually started 2003 with a version of the dominant F2002, introducing the F2003-GA—the name paying tribute to recently-passed Fiat scion Gianni Angelli—at the Spanish Grand Prix. Schumacher won that race, and took victory at Austria, Canada, Italy, and Indianapolis, behind the wheel of chassis 229. Additionally, this was the car Schumacher was driving when he clinched the title at the season finale in Japan.
RM Sotheby's says that Ferrari built six F2003s, and this one was refreshed at the factory last year, with just 148 miles on its refreshed engine, and other driveline components said to be in fresh condition. Ferrari's Corse Clienti program provides support for owners of old F1 cars who want to run them at various events around the world. So, think of this F2003 as being something like the ultimate track day car.
There's no price estimate for this car, but note that in 2017, an ex-Schumacher F2001 sold for $7.5 million at auction. It's reasonable to expect this could go for even more, given its extraordinary racing history.
