Smith County parking construction to enter next phase, additional roads closed

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Smith County announced that the construction of the new parking garage in Downtown Tyler has entered its second phase, which will cause additional road closures.

Downtown Tyler parking garage progress may bring traffic disruption

According to Smith County, a portion of East Ferguson Street, from Center Avenue to Spring Avenue, will be closed beginning on Monday for the next phase of construction.

The county said that the closure is expected to last approximately three weeks, there will be detour signs and an electronic message board to guide drivers to alternate routes.

“We appreciate all of the patience and understanding shown by our employees and visitors,” Smith County Judge Neal Franklin said. “We understand these parking temporary changes are difficult, but we are excited about how great the parking garage will be when it is completed.”

The county clarified that Ferguson Street’s closure is to allow for 18-wheelers to transport pieces of the over 540 space parking garage.

Smith County said that visitors can park in the juror parking lot, which will be reduced to one point of exit and entry across from the animal shelter off Center Avenue.

Officials said that pedestrians that are coming to the Smith County Annex building from the parking lot will have to take a detour that will be indicated by white painted arrows.

As a result of the visitor spaces in front of the Annex building being unavailable, an additional five parking meters along Spring Avenue will be covered with visitor bags with two van-accessible parking spots available on the north side of the courthouse.
