Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball has announced that her mother has died.

The former Strictly - It Takes Two host revealed last month that she would be taking some time away from her radio show after her mum Julia was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Zoe has now confirmed that her mother has passed away, announcing the sad news with a picture of Julia on her Instagram page.

"Sleep tight dear Mama," she wrote. "Thank you for teaching us how to love unconditionally, to always show courage and empathy, and how, even in the darkest of days, laughter is the greatest of gifts.

"We are bereft without you but will hold so tight to each other. Your grace & your smile that lit up every room you were in, will light the stars to guide us."

Zoe has since received a host of support, with Strictly star Susan Calman writing: "Sending all my love xx."

BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Lauren Laverne said: "I'm so sorry for your loss, Zoe. Sending you all the love in the world from all of us xxxx," while presenter Edith Bowman added: "Oh Zoe I'm so so sorry to hear your news. Sending you so much love and hugs xxxx."

"Take care of yourself, lovely Zoe xx," wrote Strictly's John Whaite, while comedian Alan Carr said: "Oh Zoe! Sending you SO much love."

Gaby Roslin shared the sad news of Julia's passing as she stood in on Zoe's Radio 2 breakfast show today (April 24), telling listeners: "It's no secret Zoe has been off for a little while looking after her mum, Julia.

"Very sadly, Julia lost her fight yesterday and we're obviously all sending so much love to Zoe and the whole family...

"It's a horrible, awful time, and I know so many of you have been through this, loving a parent and a loved one, and I think the one thing, if I could pass on is, grief has no rule. There are no rules about this at all."

Gaby added: "Zoe, you know I have got your back – I'll always have your back. I love you dearly, you're a very dear friend and everyone on the team loves you and send you so much love. And to anybody else who is fighting the fight and being as brave as they possibly can be, I am sending you lots of love as well.”

She then played the Fleetwood Mac song 'Songbird'.

Last week, Zoe confirmed that her mother had been moved to a hospice, thanking her followers for their support. She also paid tribute to to the medical staff who had helped her mother.
