What It Is: BMW’s coupelike SUV seemed like a crazy idea when the X6 first arrived a decade ago, but it caught on and reached full swing in the ensuing years. So it’s no surprise that BMW is readying the third-generation X6 now that the X5 on which it’s based has received a redesign for 2019. The X6’s focus on exclusivity and rakishness over practicality and usefulness will remain, as will its price premium over the more workaday X5.

Why It Matters: While its sales numbers might seem incremental compared to the higher-volume X5, the X6 is good for BMW’s bottom line. After all, it uses the X5’s basic mechanicals but costs a fair bit more, which adds up to heftier profit margins. The model also has caught on hugely in certain parts of the world, attracting a loyal following in the Russia market, for example.

Platform: The new X6 will be based on the new X5, which now shares its platform with the 5- and 7-series sedans. Expect the X6 to receive the same 1.6-inch wheelbase stretch as its boxier stablemate.

Powertrain: The X6’s powertrain options should mirror the X5’s, which means the base model in the United States will be an X6 40i with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six good for 335 horsepower. There will be an upgrade to a 456-hp turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 in the 50i, and another full-bore X6 M model is all but inevitable, too. All-wheel drive is expected to be standard, but BMW may see fit to offer a rear-drive version as it does in the current X6.

Competition: Audi Q8, Mercedes-AMG GLE coupe, Porsche Cayenne, Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

Estimated Arrival and Price: As in the past, the X6’s debut should follow the X5’s by several months, so expect the new X6 to arrive sometime next year as a 2020 model.
