Overall Rating:

Based on the mid-size Mercedes-Benz GLE-class, the GLE43 SUV and the GLE43 coupe have been tweaked by the company's AMG division for zestier performance. Both have an enhanced 385-hp twin-turbo V-6 and unique suspension tuning, but only the coupe can corner with any tenacity. Its fastback design definitely stands out even though it also reduces cargo space. While the squareback version sticks with traditional style and functionality, it's the less exciting of the two. Still, both AMG GLE models share an outdated platform and aging interior that distance them from most of the newer products from Mercedes. Thankfully, the next-generation GLE-class is on the horizon.

What's New for 2018?

In preparation for the completely redesigned GLE-class, which will include multiple AMG versions in the near future, Mercedes has made few changes to the current vehicle. The AMG GLE43 and GLE43 coupe both have more horsepower for 2018, with total output increasing from 362 to 385. The coupe body style also gets the newly available AMG Performance Studio package, which includes distinct orange and black exterior accents as well as gray and orange interior appliqués.

Trims and Options We'd Choose

As with the other "43" models from Mercedes-AMG, these GLE43s serve as entry points into the AMG club. The squareback version starts at $68,745 ($600 more than last year); the GLE43 coupe costs an additional $2750. While the BMW X5 M and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged are cut from similar cloth, their price and performance align more with Mercedes' mighty GLE63 and GLE63 S variants with their twin-turbo V-8s. The more restrained GLE43 still delivers sufficient thrills, but buyers should monitor how much they spend on frills, as options can quickly drive prices north of $80K. We'd keep costs in check with a few tasteful and useful features, including:

• Parking Assistant package: 360-degree camera and automated parking; ($1290)
• Massaging front seats ($1100)
• Leather upholstery ($1620)

These add-ons introduce another level of luxury and tech to an already attractive package. As equipped, our GLE43 SUV totaled $72,755. Although the Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90 are comparable and equally attractive alternatives, the Mercedes-AMG has a more aggressive side that those two utes don't.
