San Diego Zoo Celebrates Galapagos Tortoise’s 139th Birthday

What age do you consider officially "old"? If you ask my kids, I'm old and I'm only 50. Is it 80? 90? 100? I think for me 100 is a good age. @San Diego Zoo was recently lucky enough to celebrate one of their oldest resident's 139th birthday, and people are there for it!

The video was pretty short and shows Gramma the Galapagos tortoise enjoying her big day. She takes a walk (when you're 139 you've got to keep yourself in good health!) and she spots a special treat. It may not be a birthday cake, but it's something that she looks like she really enjoys eating!

That's crazy to me that she's lived that long! The things she must have seen in more than a hundred years is just incredible. These Galapagos tortoises have been known to live for up to 150 years, so this old lady still has a way to go and many more years to celebrate. And their hearts only beat 10 beats per minute? That's wild!

Commenters loved watching Gramma dig into her 'birthday cake' of lettuce and other veggies. @Fataliny said, "Lookin' good for her age!" and @San Diego Zoo replied back jokingly, "Doesn't look a day over 120"! @Whit daydreamed, "Oh to be an ancient tortoise eating snacks and laying in the sun". @Emma Carefoot added, "There was a whole different set of people on earth when she was born. that’s weird".

Here's to hoping that Gramma lives to see 150 and beyond! She seems to be thriving at the zoo, and her enjoying many more birthday cakes is something I'll be keeping an eye on!
