100-Year-Old Tortoise Reunited With Louisiana Family After a Daring Escape and Rescue

Turtles and tortoises are generally thought of as slow and still, but that's not always the case. I remember growing up with a pet box turtle and feeling so impressed at how fast she could cross the yard. There were even a few occasions when I thought I might lose track of her! So when I read about the Louisiana tortoise who escaped his family's yard, I wasn't as surprised as other readers.

Biscuit, the African spurred tortoise, may be over 100 years old, but nothing was slowing this reptile down. The massive animal made his great escape when the wind and rain blew open the gate in his yard, and his loving family had been looking for him the entire day. That's right--this whole ordeal happened on August 30!

When a local shelter posted about a found pet tortoise in their care, Biscuit's owners didn't wait long to get their boy back. They even drove to Cara's House Animal Rescue to walk the tortoise out to the truck!

How sweet! Biscuit's family clearly loves him a lot (with a tortoise name as sweet as that, how could you not?) and I'm relieved to see the gentle, large animal back in his owners' care. He was found in distress in the New River Canal in Ascension Parish, just southwest of Baton Rouge, when Animal Control came to his rescue. He was quickly transported to the animal shelter, who posted on Facebook about the found Tortoise.

That's how Biscuit's owner, Lamoine Howard, found out where his tortoise was! This whole ordeal happened on August 30, and we think it's safe to say that the yard's gate has been repaired by now. This massive tortoise may have gotten a taste of freedom, but he'll be so much safer at home!
