The comedy legend told Parade that as long as she's physically able, she wants to keep slaying on screen.

"I'm happy to be working and that I've got all my parts," she said. "I have my hips and my knees—and I think my brain—so as long as I can keep that up and work, then I want to work."

How did Carol Burnett get her start?

Burnett was born in San Antonio, Texas, and after her parents divorced, moved to Hollywood, where they both relocated. Burnett lived in a boarding house with her grandmother and sister in a low-income neighborhood near her mother's home.

Burnett was an imaginative child, often entertaining friends and classmates with characters and voices she developed, and played music with her grandmother, sister and mom at home.

In 1951, Burnett graduated from Hollywood High School and received an anonymous gift of $50 to pay for her first year of college at UCLA, where she initially intended to study journalism. (Yep, $50 for a full year of college. How are your student loans going?)

After she began college, she switched her major to English and theater arts, but never actually wanted to act at that time, preferring to write plays instead, she previously told The Toronto Star. That changed the first time she got onstage and got a laugh—she was hooked.

Burnett told PEOPLE that during her class' final performance in her junior year in 1954, an anonymous man offered Burnett and her then-boyfriend $1,000 in an interest-free loan to go to New York to pursue acting. The man's conditions were that she repay him within five years, never reveal his name and pay it forward later to someone else in need.

Burnett moved to New York in 1955, working odd jobs while pursuing stardom. She landed bit parts and guest roles in children's programs and on the Buddy Hackett sitcom Stanley in 1956. After the show was canceled in 1957, Burnett performed cabaret and nightclub shows, eventually landing spots on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show.

Her first taste of success came in stage acting, winning a Tony Award in 1959 for Once Upon A Mattress, based on the classic fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. She'd later reprise the role for a televised special of the production.

That year, she also got a seriously amazing mentor: Lucille Ball, who took Burnett under her wing and showed her the ropes of the industry in both the creative and business arenas. Burnett guest-starred on The Lucy Show, and Ball would later return the favor with appearances in The Carol Burnett Show.

In 1962, Burnett won her first Emmy for Outstanding Performance in a Variety or Musical Program or Series for her work on The Garry Moore Show, where she was a cast regular.

Later that year, Burnett co-starred with Julie Andrews in their own variety special, Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall.

Over the next several years, Burnett kept working in TV and starred in her first movie, but her biggest break came in 1967: After turning down a CBS sitcom titled Here's Agnes, she launched her iconic variety hour, The Carol Burnett Show.

Since then, she's appeared in TV and film consistently in both comedic and dramatic roles. Burnett's won a total of seven Primetime Emmys (and 23 nominations), seven Golden Globes (out of 18 nods), one Grammy and one Tony (and counting). All she needs is an Oscar to achieve EGOT status.
