The Powerful Reason ‘Moana’ Star Auli’i Cravalho Wore a Red Lipstick Handprint Over Her Mouth

The star is taking a bold stance to bring awareness to important social issues.

Moana voice actress Auli’i Cravalho seized the opportunity to make a bold statement for a good reason during a recent red carpet appearance.

For the premiere event of her latest project, Amazon Prime’s The Power, the 22-year-old wore a white Naeem Khan gown with blue and green abstract beading, along with a handprint made of red lipstick over her mouth.

Cravalho wore the makeup statement proudly, telling Parade at the March 23 event held at DGA Theater in NYC that she was decidedly "bringing light to missing and murdered Indigenous women."

The Hawaiian actress continued, giving insight as to why she made the choice to bring awareness to the social issue on this specific platform. "We were lucky enough to film The Power in Vancouver and I saw many a monument," she explained, passionately adding: "I felt it was important being on this incredible carpet with so many wonderful women and portraying the story that we are, I wanted to bring light to some real life topics that are close to my heart."

The Power is a science fiction-based thriller-drama series where "teenage girls suddenly and mysteriously develop a special power that allows them to electrocute people at will," according to its synopsis.

In addition to the Disney animated film alum, it also features Toni Collette, Eddie Marsan, Ria Zmitrowicz, Toheeb Jimoh, John Leguizamo and more.

The first three episodes of the project drop March 31 on the streamer, with the remaining six episodes available each Friday until the May 12-slated finale.
