West Virginia police agencies have 'person of interest' in May 6 homicide near Martinsburg

A "person of interest has been developed" in the May 6 homicide near Martinsburg, W.Va., and investigators are working with the victim's family on obtaining a positive identification of the victim using DNA, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.

A body was found the night of Monday, May 6, after firefighters put out a fire in a field off Golf Course Road outside city limits. Berkeley County 911 received a call around 7:29 p.m. Monday for the fire.

Golf Course Road runs east of Martinsburg and continues southeast.

On Thursday afternoon, the sheriff's office released an update stating its investigators had been working with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, West Virginia State Police and other agencies in investigating the homicide.

The person of interest in the case was being held in another jurisdiction on unrelated charges, the release states.

"Our investigators are working around the clock to solve this senseless crime," Berkeley County Sheriff Rob Blair said in the release. "It is great to see numerous agencies from multiple jurisdictions working together for a common goal. The professionalism that I have seen these few days, has made me proud to lead this organization. We will have a finalization of this tragic event very soon."
