Surfside Beach won’t have grand-opening ceremony for new pier until fall, mayor says

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The town of Surfside Beach plans to wait until the fall to officially celebrate its newly opened pier.

“We want every pier business to be open and we do not want to have the ceremony in the height of tourist season, so the target is September,” Mayor Robert Krouse said Friday in a newsletter to the town’s residents. “There is A LOT that must be done to make this happen but you will be able to follow the news here as well as on the town’s website and social media.”

After years of construction and delays, the pier opened on March 14 after the completion of a final inspection. The opening coincided with the town’s 60th birthday celebration.

Construction on the concrete pier began in December 2020. It replaces one that was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. Initially, officials said they expected the pier to be walkable in July 2022, but after a series of delays and miscommunications that date was pushed back.

Then, last August, town officials said they expected to have a soft opening in either September or October and a grand opening in April.
