Scam Alert: Fake callers pose as Henry County deputies to ‘collect fines’

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — An ongoing phone scam has been circling through Henry County, and Sheriff Wayne Davis is advising residents to be aware.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office says callers are posing as deputies and threatening to arrest the victim if they do not pay a fine. Deputies said the caller may identify themselves as a law enforcement officer.

According to the sheriff’s office, the callers tell the victim they could avoid being arrested if they paid the fine. This is normally through buying a gift card, a prepaid debit card, or by making an electronic payment.

Deputies say scammers often provide convincing information, including the real name and location of the courthouse, court phone numbers, and case and badge numbers. This may include information about the victim’s name, work address, and date of birth.

In some cases, the call may be spoofed from the sheriff’s office.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public that they do not collect fines and deputies will not contact residents and ask for any form of payment over the phone.

Anyone who has been a victim of a scam or has information about a suspected scammer is asked to call the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at 276-638-8751 or Crimestoppers at 63-CRIME (632-7463).
