Murder suspect pleads not guilty to contraband charges

Apr. 25—CATLETTSBURG — An Ashland man accused of murdering his girlfriend in October 2021 was in court for a different reason on Thursday.

Taylon Bensinger, charged in the death of 24-year-old Angel B. Rowe on Montgomery Avenue, appeared via video conference for an arraignment in Boyd County Circuit Court on two counts of smuggling contraband into jail.

On behalf of Bensinger, court-appointed attorney Alea Hipes pleaded not guilty to the contraband charges. Details regarding the contraband were not divulged.

According to Hipes, Bensinger will be represented by Greg Griffith in both the murder and contraband cases going forward.

Bensinger, who is an inmate at Boyd County Detention Center, is set for a pre-trial for both cases on June 20. Along with the murder and contraband charges, he is charged with tampering with physical evidence and first-degree wanton endangerment.
