Man killed in head-on crash in Phelan identified as local father

A man who died after a SUV crossed into opposing traffic lanes and struck his car head-on in Phelan over the weekend, killing both drivers, has been identified as a 27-year-old father of two.

Tommy Solis of Phelan died at the scene of the crash, which took place about 8:15 p.m. Sunday along Phelan Road, just east of Tumbleweed Road, according to San Bernardino County Coroner's records.

The other involved driver who was killed in the wreck had not yet been formally identified Wednesday. She was described by the California Highway Patrol as a 38-year-old Oak Hills woman.

Solis was driving a 2015 Subaru Forester west along Phelan Road when an eastbound 2018 GMC Yukon swerved across the roadway and collided head-on, CHP Officer Xavier Rodriguez said at the time.

Solis was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman driving the GMC died a short time later at a hospital, investigators said. A passenger in the GMC was hospitalized with major injuries.

Solis is survived by two young children, wife Patricia Solis said in a statement accompanying an online fundraiser to help the family.

"We are devastated to announce the untimely passing of Tommy Solis, a cherished son, brother, husband, and devoted father to two beautiful children. Tommy's unexpected departure has left us all heartbroken," she said. "Tommy was known for his kind heart, generous spirit, and the great love he had for his family. His greatest joy was being a father, and he embraced every moment."
