Father sues driver after daughter hit, killed at vigil site

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Less than one week after his daughter’s death, a father has filed a lawsuit against the driver accused of hitting her.

A vehicle struck 18-year-old Bethany Leggio as she was visiting the site where another teen had died a few days earlier — at 55th Street South and Hoover.

At 11 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, a group had gathered on the road for a memorial service. The sheriff’s office says a vehicle tried to pass them and hit Leggio and some parked vehicles.

Leggio died from her injuries.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office arrested the driver and booked her on suspicion of DUI. At last check, she has not been charged. KSN News does not name suspects unless they are charged. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said the case remains under investigation.

On Monday, Edward Leggio, Bethany Leggio’s father, sued the driver, claiming wrongful death and seeking more than $75,000.
