Champaign City Council opens applications for vacant seat

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Champaign is now accepting applications to fill a vacant seat on the City Council.

The vacancy is for the District 3 councilmember, the position of which Daniel Iniguez resigned from on May 14. State statute requires that the City Council fill the seat within 60 days of the vacancy beginning.

Champaign City Council looking to fill vacancy

To fill the vacancy, eligible applicants must live in District 3, be a registered voter in the City of Champaign, be current in payments of taxes and debts owned to the city and not have been convicted of a crime.

Completed applications must be submitted to the City Clerk by noon on June 3 by either dropping it off at the City Building, 102 North Neil Street, or by emailing them to cityclerk@champaignil.gov. The Champaign City Council will review applications during a Study Session meeting on June 11 with the expectation of voting to fill the vacancy on June 18.

The appointed individual will serve the remainder of the council term, which ends May 6, 2025.
