Brandon man shot, carjacked while selling car to buyer on Facebook Marketplace

BRANDON, Fla. (WFLA) — A Facebook Marketplace deal in Brandon ended with a man being shot twice.

Investigators said it happened as a would-be buyer tried to pull off a carjacking, instead of paying.

A mother, whose identity we are protecting, said she never imagined a listing on Facebook would put her son in danger.

“Unfortunately, the gentleman did not come with intentions he stated he was going to come with, he came with murderous intentions,” the victim’s mother said.

She said her son ran home after being shot during a meet-up with what he thought was a potential buyer.

“They had already agreed and negotiated on a price so in my son’s mind the car was sold, so he was cleaning out the last items in the car before the gentleman came to pick the vehicle up.”

Charging documents reveal a witness heard the commotion, and then heard two gunshots.

“My son ran to the door, screaming help, and he kind of just fell through the door and there was blood everywhere.”

Investigators said responding deputies saw the victim’s stolen car headed away from the scene. The driver, Caleb Davis, 23, told them he bought the car from a post on Facebook Marketplace.

Now the victim’s mother is warning about the risk of online transactions.
