BMW the Latest Luxury Automaker to Offer Vehicle Subscription Service

BMW Financial Services in the U.S. has announced the debut of Access by BMW, a vehicle subscription service that will provide members with unlimited access to a fleet of BMW vehicles, through a single monthly subscription. The program is starting in Nashville, where local BMW dealers will be responsible for vehicle deliveries and maintenance.

Access by BMW members may request a vehicle, based on their planned usage or activity, via mobile app. A BMW concierge will personally deliver the vehicle most closely matching the member’s needs to their location at the desired time. Vehicles arrive fully fueled and freshly detailed with personal preferences already pre-set.

During the pilot phase, Access by BMW memberships will be offered in two tiers of luxury, ranging from $2,000 - $3,700 per month, inclusive of vehicle maintenance, insurance and BMW Roadside Assistance. Additional tiers will be added as the program expands.

The “Legend” tier includes a selection of BMW sedans, coupes and convertibles, as well as BMW Sports Activity Vehicles. The “M” tier consists of BMW’s most powerful and highest-performing models.

Several other automakers, mostly luxury brands, are now offering subscription services of this kind, but only in limited markets. Book by Cadillac was among the first of these programs, with pilot programs launched in New York City, Dallas, and Los Angeles that offered access to five high-end models for a flat monthly fee of $1,800 including everything but fuel. At the other end of the pricing spectrum, Hyundai offers Unlimited+ for its Ioniq Electric, for as little as $275 per month, while Porsche Passport offers access to the 718 Boxster and Cayman, Cayenne, and Macan for $2,000 a month or the 911 and Panamera for $3,000. Volvo offers its XC40 crossover SUV starting at $600 a month. Ford is offering Lincolns with a payment structure that varies according to vehicle, as well as a subscription service for certified pre-owned Fords in the Los Angeles and San Francisco regions.
