Video Honors the Dog Heroes From 9/11 on the 22nd-Year Anniversary

Today marks the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which took the lives of nearly 3,000 people, in New York, outside Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania. It was a day that changed America forever. And on this anniversary we remember the lives lost, the first responders, and all the heroes who stepped in.

Among the nearly 10,000 rescue workers were 300 dogs. These dogs helped during search and rescue missions, looked for explosives, and gave comfort to those who needed it. TikTok account @weratedogs shared a special video on the anniversary of the attacks to honor a few of these heroic dogs.

There are so many dogs and rescue teams that deserve recognition for helping on this horrific day. The dogs mentioned in the video are just a few stories of the heroic dogs that worked endlessly to save people on September 11, 2001.

The first dogs on the scene came from the NYPD's Urban Search and Rescue Team. The team included Apollo, a German Sherpherd, who arrived just 15 minutes after the south tower collapses. Other dogs the video mentioned are a two-year-old Rat Terrier named Ricky, a Belgian Shepherd Dog named Hansen, and Trakr a German Shepherd from Canada who found the last remaining survivor 26 hours after the collapse.

These dogs and many more worked endlessly to find survivors. It breaks our hearts to hear how discouraged they would get after not being able to find anyone. The rescue teams would have to hold "mock" rescues in order to make the dogs feel successful. One dog even had to retire after finding the remains of two firefighters since it effected him so much. Poor pup. We're proud that he still worked and helped out. And we're proud of all of these heroic dogs. May we never forget.
