McDonald’s Earnings Report Reveals How CosMc’s Stacks Up to Starbucks, Dunkin

McDonald’s Q1 earnings report (via placer.ai) reveals some astonishing facts about how the chain’s snack-focused spin-off, CosMc’s, is smoking its competition.

Comparing foot traffic at the flagship CosMc’s location in Bolingbrook, IL, against Starbucks, Dunkin, and McDonald’s locations within a one-mile radius “reveals significant differences in visitation patterns,” the report found. Namely, CosMc’s is serving way more customers than its competitors during certain times of the day. It’s a huge win for the fledgling chain, which positioned itself as a direct competitor to Starbucks and Dunkin.

Between all four brands, CosMc’s had by far the largest share of customers in the late afternoon and evening hours. Between 3 p.m. and 6:59 p.m., CosMc’s saw 44.8 percent of visitors compared to 36.4 percent at McDonald’s; 24.7 percent at Dunkin; and 18.3 percent at Starbucks.

CosMc’s also prevailed over the other restaurants in the 11 a.m. to 2:59 p.m. window. During that time, it saw 38.3 percent of customers compared to 38 percent at McD’s; 34.5 percent at Dunkin; and 31.7 percent at Starbucks.

Interestingly, CosMc’s saw the least visitors amongst all four brands during the early morning hours of 7 a.m. to 10:59 a.m. Dunkin and Starbucks came out on top in the breakfast wars, with 47.2 and 43.6 percent, respectively. McDonald’s saw 25.6 percent of visitors during this time, while CosMc’s saw just 16.9 percent.

The report notes that this trend indicates CosMc’s bid to focus on drinks and small snacks has paid dividends. While customers are still looking to reliable standbys like Starbucks and Dunkin for breakfast, they’re flocking in equal or larger numbers to CosMc’s for a mid-day refreshment.

Since launching the Bolingbrook location in December, CosMc’s has opened three additional stores in Texas. The company, emboldened by this recent earnings report, plans to continue its expansion across the United States.
