Uga X, the mascot of the University of Georgia football team died on Tuesday. The Bulldog, affectionately known as "Que," died peacefully in his home in Savannah, Georgia. He was 10 years old.

Que resigned from being the world's goodest mascot back in 2022 "after becoming the most decorated of all the Bulldog mascots."

"He compiled a football record of 91-18, presided over two SEC titles, the 2021 and 2022 College Football Playoff national championships, and seven New Year’s Six bowl appearances," the tweet reads

The History of the University of Georgia's Mascot Uga X

Que wasn't the first Bulldog's mascot. In fact he follows a line of Bulldogs that have support the team ever since the first Bulldog mascot was named in the 1950s. The tradition passed from the first Uga (Uga I) in 1956. The first Uga (pronounced Uh-guh not Oogah) was found by UGA tennis coach Dan Magill when he tapped the first dog to be the official mascot.

Before Uga, fans would show up at football games with their Bulldogs on the sidelines. In the early-to-mid 1950s, a brindle Bulldog Mike started showing up at games. Magill asked two of his tennis players live in the second floor of a campus field house with the pup for free, in exchange for them taking care of the pup.

Before Mike died in 1956, football coach Wally Butts asked Magill to find them a new dog to replace him. Magill reached out to a former swimmer and law student, Sonny Seiler, who was at the time working at UGA's ticket office. Seiler told him that his wife "had a little baby English puppy whose grandfather was the Georgia mascot at the Rose Bowl game on New Year’s Day of ‘43," The Telegraph reports. And from there the Uga tradition was born.

The Seiler family has maintained the line of UGA Bulldogs every since. It's been almost 70 years since the first Uga was born. Que was succeeded by Uga XI, also known as Boom, when he retired — just in time for the 2023 season.

In their touching tribute to the pup, the UGA athletic department offered the highest praise for one of their own: "He will always be remembered as a Damn Good Dawg."
