Emilia Clarke and Prince William

Emilia Clarke and her mother, Jennifer, received the royal treatment in a Feb. 21 ceremony at Windsor Castle, during which Prince William declared both women Members of the Order of the British Empire.

The mother-daughter duo received the MBE awards for their work with SameYou, a charity they co-founded to help brain injury survivors. The Game of Thrones star has been open with the public about her own experience with brain injuries following the two brain aneurysms she endured in 2011 and 2013.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Instagram account shared a short video showing the actress and her mother receiving the awards from William.

“From Westeros to Windsor, a real pleasure presenting @emilia_clarke and her mum Jennifer with their honours today for their charity work with @sameyouorg supporting brain injury recovery care,” the post said in a nod to the fictional Game of Thrones continent. “Congratulations to all of today’s recipients!”

Clarke’s mother explained in the video that they launched their charity “because the consequences of brain injury are just so unknown.” She added that they are committed to their work with SameYou “to try and help other people who have been doing it for a lot longer than us” and to make the kinds of changes that are “so desperately needed for people.”

Clarke, 37, who portrayed Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s hit fantasy show, first learned that she was due to receive the award late last year. In a Jan. 2 post on Instagram, Clarke wrote that she was “flabbergasted and amazed” to receive the “incredible honour.”

“But all of this glamour and excitement is the stuff of pictures,” she wrote, adding that the award “is really for everyone who has and still is suffering from a brain injury.”

“It is my life’s mission to raise this cause to the level it should be at,” she said at the time. “Global awareness, and global care.”
