Morgan Wallen’s ex is speaking out after he was arrested in Nashville just four days after her wedding.

KT Smith, who shares son Indigo, 3½, with the country singer, said in a statement to PEOPLE that despite reports indicating otherwise, she does not believe Wallen’s arrest is in any way connected to her surprise marriage to fiancé Luke Scornavacco.

“Although it may seem like it correlates because of the timeline, I have no evidence to believe the incident had anything to do with the recent marriage announcement,” said Smith in the statement, which was first obtained by The Daily Beast. “I cannot speak on Morgan’s behalf, but I do pray the very best for him. Praying that this was just a slip up and that he will return to the good path that he was on prior.”

Smith, 29, and Wallen, 30, started dating in 2016 and were engaged a few months later. They eventually broke off their engagement, but continued dating for several more years. They welcomed their son in July 2020, after they’d broken up for good.

On Sunday, April 7, Wallen was arrested on felony charges after he allegedly threw a chair off the roof of a Nashville bar on April 7.

The “You Proof” singer allegedly tossed the chair from the roof of Chief’s Bar just before 11 p.m. local time, and two police officers who were standing in front of the bar watched it fall, according to a statement from Metro Nashville police.

Wallen was arrested and charged with three counts of reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct, according to court records obtained by PEOPLE. He faced a $15,250 bond, and is due in court in Nashville on May 3, the same day he’s set to play the 69,000-capacity Nissan Stadium in downtown Nashville.

Chief’s on Broadway is owned by Wallen’s pal and fellow country singer Eric Church, and celebrated its grand opening on Friday, April 5.

Wallen's attorney, Worrick Robinson, provided a statement to PEOPLE following the news of the star's arrest, noting that he is "cooperating" with police.

“At 10:53p Sunday evening Morgan Wallen was arrested in downtown Nashville for reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct," the statement reads. "He is cooperating fully with authorities.”

Wallen’s arrest comes after previous controversy that emerged after he was captured on video saying the N-word while drunk on a night out with friends in 2021. He had his record label contract suspended and his songs removed from radio play, and later revealed in a sit-down with Good Morning America that he checked into a rehabilitation center after the incident.

In 2021, Wallen opened up to PEOPLE about co-parenting with Smith, and said at the time that being a single dad was “not how I imagined parenthood.”

"My parents are still together, you know. They raised [me and my sisters] together. That was my idea of what my life would look like. That's not the way it turned out. And I struggled with that a little bit when I first found out," Wallen said.

He admitted that he and his ex experienced “some difficulties” in the early stages of co-parenting, but made sure their son was their top priority.

"The most important thing is he's in our life now. He's happy. He's healthy. He's incredible," Wallen said.
