Kerry Washington on 'Scandal' Season 5: 'Not What I Thought It Was Going to Be'

The moment you think you know what’s up on Scandal is right when Shonda Rhimes and the writers like to throw a huge twist at us. Like, when many viewers had given up hope that Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) could ever be together — that’s when the two reunited by making out on the White House’s Truman Balcony.

It’s not like the cast knows any better either. Even Washington has no clue, as she told us at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour.

“It’s not what I thought it was going to be,” she teased. “Tony Goldwyn had the same reaction. But it’s fun.”

Sure, Olitz had that crazy, romantic kiss on the balcony, but he’s still the president. And married to Mellie (Bellamy Young).

“What Fitz wants more than anything is to find peace and equilibrium with Olivia, to have a life with Olivia,” Goldwyn told Yahoo TV recently. “So that’s the one negotiating and leverage point that Mellie has.”

Scandal has always boasted amazing guest stars, and Season 5 will be no exception. Who is Washington’s dream guest? The actress might have to wait until the series is almost over, because if this person does make an appearance, “We might have to drop the mic and end the show!”

Scandal returns Thursday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
