Neil Young for Supreme: Old Men Get in the Fashion Game Too

Fashion might be youth-obsessed, but for the Spring 2015 ad campaigns, designers chose to celebrate women of a certain age instead. Joan Didion posed for Céline, Joni Mitchell continued the musician tradition at Saint Laurent, and Iris Apfel showed off her signature eccentricity for Kate Spade. They were all unexpected choices that felt like a breath of fresh air, beneath all the various Kardashian family members currently taking over the industry.

Well, now it seems like old dudes are getting in on the game too. Street-wear label Supreme announced on Wednesday that none other than Neil Young will be the face of the brand this season. The 69-year old has traditionally shunned “selling out,” even penning a song back in the 90’s about the commercialization of music, poking fun at celebrities like Michael Jackson who had campaigns with Pepsi. But hey, it’s been over two decades since that happened and he’s allowed to change his mind! As is Supreme’s practice, Young’s campaign image will also be featured on a T-shirt. We have to wonder: Will kids be willing to wait in line for hours for a Neil Young tee the way they did for Supreme’s Kate Moss shirt back in 2012? Maybe they won’t, but perhaps an older, slightly grayer crowd, will make up for it.
