Joni Mitchell Headlining Saint Laurent's New Campaign

Joni Mitchell is cooler than all of us — she’s a legendary musician, a vocal activist for worldwide peace, and a pop culture heroine — and it has nothing to do with her clothes (or maybe just a little). The 71-year-old was rocking the boho look before the Olsens made it mainstream and Hedi Slimane decided to give the folk singer credit where credit’s due and photographed her for the latest Saint Laurent campaign. Unsurprisingly, the results are stunning.

Mitchell’s involvement is part of the Saint Laurent Music Project, a collaboration between the fashion house and musicians such as Kim Gordon, Marilyn Manson, and Courtney Love that lets rockers style themselves for shoots and includes their original songs on runway soundtracks.

In the recently released ads, Mitchell wears a YSL tunic and fedora, along with a custom-made leather cape. She was shot at her home in Bel Air, Calif., clutching her guitar in place of this season’s status bag.

The news of Mitchell’s campaign comes just after Céline cast 80-year-old Joan Didion as the face of its SS ’15 season, and confirms something you probably already know: Grandmothers are the chicest women around and that’s just fine.
