It's Official: Kanye West Loves Fashion More Than Anyone

Let’s be honest, we live for a Kanye interview. Yes we, as in Yahoo Style, but also we, as in the public. Each one’s better than the last. And his most recent, with BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe doesn’t disappoint. It’s Lowe’s last before he leaves for Apple, and West touches on everything from his new album to Elon Musk, to Paul McCartney and Drake. He makes up a word––“futch”––name drops Obama (sans the President title, because they’re that close) and says that he’s “practicing really hard…as many times a day as I can” to make Nori a big sister. He also cries. Along the way, West ties everything back to fashion.

Meeting Paul McCartney is like meeting Ralph Lauren,” West says. Before being blessed by the American designer at his FW 2015 show, the singer had told Style.com: “Ralph is the god. And that’s all I want to say about Ralph.” Clearly, he’s cool with polytheism, so long as it’s in the name of fashion. And while boys and breakups prompt Taylor Swift’s songs, clothes inspired Kanye’s recent melodies. “The College Dropout came out of a fight to want to rap,” he said. “This new album’s coming out of a fight to want to design. It’s a joyful noise unto the Lord.” Here’s to hoping the Lord (or at least Ralph) is listening!

West calls Drake “the hottest rapper in the game”––a huge statement, coming from the mouth of a bona fide music man––and tells him to “run, fly, go as fast you can.” He offers to mentor the 28-year-old, and give him “confidential design advice,” before choking up when asked about the death of Central St. Martin’s professor Louise Wilson. West clearly wants to be the forefather of fashion. Why scream it at the rooftops when you’ve got runways, brands, and radio shows to let the world know?
