Windsor Woods tide gate construction underway in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — If you’ve driven along Interstate 264 recently near Mount Trashmore, you’ve likely noticed the large red crane that is near the skate park.

This is part of the Virginia Beach Flood Prevention Project — one of more than 40 planned following the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew’s flooding years ago. During those floods, the Windsor Woods, Princess Anne Plaza and the Lakes neighborhoods were severely impacted.

Crews are currently working to place a tide gate across Thalia Creek, which, when completed, will span 60 feet across and comprise of four gate openings.

Each gate measures 10 feet by 5 feet. Most days, the gates will remain open, allowing the tide’s natural rhythm to continue. When storms approach though, the barriers can be closed at low tide to protect against flooding.

Other efforts near the park include lowering the lakes elevation to increase stormwater storage capacity during heavy rain, all in an effort to protect the community from flooding.
