Weather Permitting: Cool start to the week in Fayetteville, but heat will return

It took a while, but the Cape Fear region is finally going to see some "normal" weather.

Temperatures this April have swung wildly, from a late freeze threat to flirting with 90 degrees. Now, after a cool start to the week, Fayetteville will settle into the 70s — right where we ought to be.

The weekend rain helped ease dry conditions, especially in the southern region. We could use more rain here, but it won't be coming this week.

Temperatures will remain cooler than normal early this week.

Here's the setup

High pressure has pushed any unsettled weather offshore, leaving the Carolinas clear and cooler.  As the high slides to the east, temperatures will moderate. There's not a stout source of warm air though, so look for highs to generally stay seasonal.

Monday will be a bit cooler than normal, with highs in the mid-60s in Fayetteville. A northerly flow will persist into the evening, and temperatures could drop to as low as 40. Pockets in the traditionally cooler regions may see the upper 30s.

It's a short-lived cooldown, however. As high pressure slides offshore, our flow shifts to the south. That will allow temperatures to jump as much as 10 degrees, into the mid-70s Tuesday and Wednesday. Lows will hold closer to 50 degrees.

After that, there's a slim chance of light rain mid-week as some energy slides north of the Cape Fear region. Some clouds are more likely for Fayetteville, with temperatures holding in the mid-70s. Residual Canadian high pressure should keep us below 80 degrees until the weekend. There's a slim shot of showers arriving this weekend as a weak front approaches with highs climbing back toward 80 degrees.

By mid-week, the region will return to the mid- to upper 70s.

Down the road

There's no real indication of extreme weather, either in temperatures or storms, through the rest of April. Fayetteville will warm up a bit next week, but it looks like our first 90-degree day will hold off until May.

Have a great week!
