Ways to observe Memorial Day across the CSRA

AUGUSTA (WJBF) – Memorial Day has been observed on the last Monday in May since 1971, though its history goes back as far as 1868 as a way to honor and mourn those who lost their lives fighting in the United States Armed Forces.

A number of local organizations are providing opportunities to do just that during Memorial Day weekend:

Sunday:

  • Augusta Air Show: Concludes Sunday at Augusta Regional Airport. For more information, click here.

  • Augusta GreenJackets vs. Kannapolis Cannon Ballers: 6:05 p.m. at SRP Park in North Augusta. The CSRA’s baseball team (a minor league affiliate of the Atlanta Braves) will commemorate Memorial Day with a fireworks show after the game on Sunday. For more information, click here.

Monday:

  • Fleet Feet Memorial Day Run/Walk: 8:30 a.m. Monday morning at the Lake Olmstead trailhead to honor more than 65,000 service members that have given their lives since the Vietnam War. Participation is free, but registration is required here.

  • Augusta Memorial Day Ceremony: 11 a.m. at the All Wars Monument on Broad Street in Olde Town. Speakers to include Mayor Garnett Johnson, Major General Paul T. Stanton from the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence and Fort Eisenhower and U.S. Rep. Rick Allen.

  • Columbia County Memorial Day Remembrance: 11 a.m. at the Memorial Garden behind the Columbia County Library in Evans.

  • Waynesboro Memorial Day Crosses: 11 a.m. at American Legion Post 120 will place crosses honoring fallen veterans from Burke County, culminating in a ceremony at the Post.
