Waverly man arrested on drug charges, allegedly found in stranger’s car

WAVERLY, N.Y. (WETM) — A Waverly man was arrested on drug charges after police say he was found in the backseat of a stranger’s car.

David Alan Gantkowski, 41, was arrested on May 23 after police investigated a report of a man entering a parked car on Broad Street in Waverly. According to the Waverly Police Department, officers received a call about Gantkowski going into the backseat of an unlocked vehicle and “passing out” at about 11:12 a.m. on Thursday. Gantkowski was still in the vehicle when officers arrived at the scene.

Police say that officers searched Gantkowski and found 24 grams of methamphetamine, 10 grams of cocaine, one gram of methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA), and numerous benzodiazepine and alprazolam pills. Officers also questioned Gantkowski and learned that he didn’t know the owner of the car he was found in and had randomly entered the vehicle.

Gantkowski was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a class B felony), one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a class C felony), and one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a class A misdemeanor).

Gantkowski’s charges were read in the Village of Waverly Justice Court on May 25. He was released and is awaiting further legal action.
