Watch Tesla Demonstrate its New Hardware Enabling Fully Autonomous Driving

From Road & Track

After announcing that every new vehicle Tesla builds will come with hardware for full self-driving capability built in, company CEO Elon Musk promised a video demonstration of the new tech. Today, Tesla posted the video, showing a Model X equipped with the new hardware driving from a man's home to his office, without any human input whatsoever. The car even manages to parallel park itself after dropping off the owner at the door to his office.

While every new Tesla will come with a new hardware suite that the automaker promises will someday enable full autonomy, the tech demonstrated in this video isn't yet offered to the public. To eventually enable full self-driving capability, Tesla will charge $3000.

Until that time, Tesla will offer consumers Enhanced Autopilot, which uses the new hardware for additional Autopilot features, like autonomous highway exiting. Costing, $5000 to activate, Enhanced Autopilot will roll out to cars by December of this year, while there's no definitive timeline for full self-driving capability.

Tesla's demonstration here is impressive, but it's important to note that it took place under truly ideal conditions. The Model X didn't have to deal with bad pavement, road construction, heavy traffic, or inclement weather. An impressive demonstration, but we have yet to see how it performs in more challenging real-world conditions.

Also worth noting is the choice of the Rolling Stones' Paint it Black as the background music here. Perhaps, this is a reference to the cars' black and white cameras, or maybe Musk just likes the song.
