Update: Victim identified after being ejected from a construction vehicle in Macon

A man is dead and three vehicles are damaged after a construction vehicle got caught under the Zebulon Road overpass in Macon, according to officials.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to reports of an overturned construction vehicle along with the Macon-Bibb Fire Department Friday afternoon. Deputies said witnesses reported the construction truck was traveling north on Interstate 475.

The vehicle had a mounted drill on it which was extended upwards, the sheriff’s office said. As the driver tried to drive under the Zebulon Road overpass, the vehicle’s extended equipment struck the overpass and the vehicle overturned, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said the driver, identified as 39-year-old Stephen Perry Croft, II, was ejected from the vehicle. Croft was given medical treatment and taken to Atrium Navicent Health. He later died from his injuries, according to medical staff.

Authorities said three other vehicles traveling on the Zebulon Road overpass had minor damage from debris due to the incident, but no one else was injured.

The circumstances surrounding the incident were still under investigation Friday. More information was expected to be released as it became available.
