UD student charged with hate crime after vandalizing Holocaust memorial on campus
A University of Delaware student has been charged with a hate crime after vandalizing a Holocaust memorial on campus and "going on an antisemitic tirade," the Delaware Department of Justice said Monday.
The justice department said the 23-year-old woman was arrested by the UD Police Department Wednesday after witnesses reported her damaging flags at a memorial for Holocaust Remembrance Week sponsored by Hillel on the Green.
She also made "vulgar statements" about the Jewish community and the Holocaust, according to the Department of Justice, with one witness reporting the woman said "the Holocaust should have happened."
The 23-year-old admitted to vandalizing the flags when she was found by police, according to her arrest warrant. She told officers that she was "frustrated and triggered by the Holocaust memorial flag display and had intentionally damaged the flags out of frustration."
The student, who has been banned from campus, was charged with committing a hate crime, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, all misdemeanors.
"Such abhorrent incidents have no place on our campus," said UD's president, vice president for institutional equality and vice president of student life in a joint letter. "As Blue Hens, we must support one another and draw strength from our shared culture of respect, civil discourse and sense of belonging."
