Toddler drowns in Ashtabula County pond

ROME TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) — An 18-month-old girl drowned in a private pond on Thursday, May 23, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl’s mother found her in the pond on the family’s Dodgeville Road property, about 15 minutes after she had gone missing, according to a Friday news release.

The girl was pulled from the pond and lifesaving measures were performed.

EMS workers from South Central Ambulance District arrived and transported her to a helicopter landing zone, from which she was flown to a hospital. But the girl died after leaving the scene.

Though the pond was fenced in, investigators learned its gate had been left open, according to the release.

An investigation is ongoing.
