Many of the people FOX4 talked to at the Memorial Day concert said they felt safe and comfortable being there.

For some people, it is one of their favorite events of the year.

“This is one of the best things Kansas City does. I’m so proud of it because this is a jewel in our crown. It really is great,” Priscilla Long, who was at Celebration at the Station, said.

50,000 people were expected to be at the event.

KCPD told FOX4 that they were prepared and would have the appropriate security in place ahead of the event.

“They said they have increased security, but I feel comfortable. I don’t think that’s (The shooting on Feb. 14th)  the norm in Kansas City,” Long said.

Around 3 p.m., people started finding their spots between Union Station’s south plaza and the north lawn of the National WWI Memorial and Museum.

The main act started at 8 p.m., with the Kansas City Symphony performing patriotic songs, including the Armed Forces Salute.

Michael Stern has conducted most of the last 20 “Celebration at the Station” performances.

Tonight’s show was his last before he retires this summer.

“We’re very much looking forward to the performances, but in particular tonight, Michael Stern’s last performance,” Bruce Long, who attended Celebration at the Station, said. “He has done so much for Kansas City and the Kansas City Symphony; year after year, this has been just a spectacular performance. “

The Memorial Day concert brings people together to honor and remember fallen Service men and women.

“The general sense of belonging and being with the city, getting back to normal and having been in the Military, it gives you just a renewed sense of why we’re here,” Cat and Chris Rymer, who were also at Celebration at the Station, said.

“To remember why we’re here and the celebration, the fireworks and the solemn moments where it kind of takes your heart for a second. It’s awesome, all of it,” Cat Rymer said.
