Storms send up to 50,000 gallons of sanitary sewer overflow into Saraland: MCHD

SARALAND, Ala. (WKRG) — Saraland Water and Sewer Service reported a sanitary sewer overflow on Friday, according to the Mobile County Health Department.

According to an MCHD news release, the overflow resulted from Friday’s strong storms that crossed over Mobile County.

“According to Saraland officials, there was a higher-than-normal flow rate because of holding final effluent until the second generator could be connected for ultraviolet disinfection,” the MCHD release said. “This came after the automatic emergency generator had a starter failure and was combined with elevated creek levels.”

The release said the sanitary sewer overflow involved fully treated effluent, or sewage, that received both primary and secondary biological treatment and its final disinfection.

About 25,000 to 50,000 gallons overflowed at Bill Myles Drive and Station Street corner into a storm ditch into Bayou Sara.

Mobile County Health Officer Dr. Kevin Michaels advised area residents to take precautions when coming into contact with standing water that may have accumulated due to the overflow.

Those in direct contact with untreated sewage should wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.

Area residents should also take precautions when using Bayou Sara for recreational purposes for the overflow.

“All seafood harvested in this general area should be thoroughly cooked before eating,” the release said. “People should wash their hands after cleaning seafood and before preparing food.”
