3 QUESTIONS
...about sunburns
Anthony talked to Rachel Grumman Bender, our resident health editor, about a new poll that reveals the sunscreen habits of Americans and how to protect your skin.
Anthony: You reported on a poll about people’s sunscreen use. What was the top finding?
Rachel: The poll found that despite 80% of Americans saying it’s “important” to protect your skin from the sun, more than 30% said they never use sunscreen. That was eye-opening to me.
Anthony: How often should I be putting on sunscreen?
Rachel: Experts told me you should apply sunscreen every morning. If you’re outdoors, reapply it every two hours, especially after you sweat or swim. Keeping it where you’ll see it can help remind you.
Anthony: Your poll found that 80% of adults have gotten sunburned at least once. Does one sunburn matter?
Rachel: The experts told me that sunburns — yes, even just one — can increase your risk for skin cancer. Having five or more doubles your risk for melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer.
Is lotion, stick or spray sunscreen better? Rachel answered this question and more.
