‘STEM For Her’ annual gala celebrates local young women pursuing STEM careers

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — STEM for Her is a local organization with a mission to help girls and young women in the DMV pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through hands-on experiences and mentorship.

Thursday, April 24th is their annual STEM for Her Gala held at the Hilton Tysons Corner in McLean, Va., with this year’s theme “Elevate Her,” celebrating the female students that the organization supports.

The event will fundraise for programs that the organization provides to local students and young women through mentorship, scholarships and STEM-related field trips.

Cristine Gollayan, Chair of the Executive Committee of STEM for Her joined DC News Now to highlight the impact of the organization and the importance of Thursday evening’s gala, not only for the organization but for the next generation of women in STEM.

“The event really highlights our students…celebrating their aspirations. They have so many dreams. So we are celebrating our students, but at the same time we celebrate the women who have paved the path,” Gollayan mentioned.

One woman who has paved the way is Aisha Bowe, a former NASA rocket scientist, who is the first black woman confirmed to fly on a commercial space flight with Blue Origin. Bowe will be honored as the STEM For Her Woman of the Year Thursday evening.
