State police: Infant's malnutrition death leads to arrest of parents

May 24—The malnutrition death of a 3-month-old infant has resulted in the arrest of two Parke County residents, Indiana State Police said Friday.

Arrested were Ashlynn G. Casey, 18, and Jordan Washington, 24. Each faces a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a Level 1 felony.

ISP said it was contacted by the Vermillion County Coroner's Office in reference to a deceased 3-month-old child brought to Union Hospital in Clinton.

The child was brought to the hospital by the parents, Casey and Washington. ISP said its investigation showed the death occurred in Rockville in Parke County.

An autopsy completed May 20 at Regional Hospital in Terre Haute determined the infant's death was due to malnutrition, ISP said.

After completing several interviews and executing a search warrant, ISP arrested Casey and Washington on Friday at the troopers' Putnamville post on warrant obtained in Parke County. Both were taken into custody without incident and taken to Putnam County Jail.

The investigation, which continues, is being conducted by Master Trooper Detective Ryan Winters, with the assistance of First Sgt. Brian Maudlin and CSI Sergeant Kari Woodard.

The Parke County Prosecutor's Office, Rockville Police Department and the Parke County Coroner's Office assisted.
