St. Jude physicians care for patients after leaving the hospital

TOPEKA (KSNT) – KSNT 27 News had the opportunity to visit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to learn about the hospital’s mission.

The facility is centered around collaboration. St. Jude shares the breakthroughs it makes to help save thousands of children worldwide. KSNT 27 News spoke with Emily Hanzlik, she’s an instructor in the neurology division at St. Jude Research Hospital.

She says the focus is saving children and making sure they thrive.

“We want them to go back and we want them to excel in whatever they want to do,” Hanzlik said, “and we have the research and the teams to make sure not only are we curing their cancer, but we’re doing it in a way that allows them to live their lives to the fullest.”

She says doctor’s track a patient’s progress even three to five years out. They’re constantly following up to make sure that they’re able to thrive years after they finish their treatment.

Hanzlik is able to help the children of St. Jude in Memphis, but you have an opportunity to help the children of St. Jude from Topeka with the St. Jude Dream Home Campaign.

The dream home can be found in southwest Topeka, at 2635 SW Sherwood Park Drive in Topeka. It is being built by Drippé Homes and has an estimated value of $600,000.

Features of the dream home include three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an estimated 2,200 square feet. Free tours of the home run from July 12-28 at the following times:

  • Fridays: 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

  • Saturdays: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Sundays: Noon to 4 p.m.
