Small earthquake recorded outside South Carolina’s capital

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A small earthquake rumbled through portions of Richland County on Tuesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

A 2.2 magnitude tremor hit about 1:45 a.m., with reported activity over an 18-mile span. Columbia, Dentsville, Elgin, Forest Acres and West Columbia. The epicenter was southeast of Elgin, according to the state Department of Emergency Management.

There have been 10 earthquakes in South Carolina since Feb. 18, with magnitudes of between 1.8 and 2.6, according to the state’s Department of Natural Resources.
