NEW BALTIMORE, Pa. – A New Baltimore woman was being treated for injuries after being found in Allegheny Township late Tuesday by a Somerset County rescue team.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue team was dispatched to assist New Baltimore firefighters’ day-long effort to find the woman Tuesday, Somerset County Sheriff Dusty Weir said.

He described the woman as elderly and said she was reported missing in a wooded area of the township. Advanced GPS mapping technology was used to track her cellphone’s coordinates, he said.

The team later realized the woman walked at least four miles and fell down while still in the wooded area, Weir added.

“Search and Rescue Team member David Leake led a ground search with members of the New Baltimore Fire Department of the heavily wooded area and located the woman at approximately 11:00 p.m. that evening,” Weir said in a media release.

The search team was able to transport the woman from the woods to a Berlin ambulance.

“I want to thank the members of our Search and Rescue Team and the New Baltimore Fire Department for their efforts in rescuing the woman, as well as the Berlin Area Ambulance for transporting her to the hospital,” Weir said.

An update on the woman’s condition was not available Thursday.
