SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Wednesday morning, Daniel Lurie, founder of the anti-poverty nonprofit Tipping Point and heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, got a big endorsement.

Former San Francisco mayor and police chief Frank Jordan joined the candidate to make the announcement throwing support behind Lurie. Jordan said his political ideals align with Lurie and he’s proud to make the endorsement.

“Right now, there’s a serious concern and it’s been going on for the last five years,” Jordan said. “Safety is turning out to be the number one concern. So, we need to get back to that first priority of government, which is the protection of life and property.”

As part of his campaign, Lurie talked about his plans for the San Francisco Police Department, and his behavioral health plan. Lurie said he plans on getting the police department and sheriff’s office fully staffed. He called for a citywide fentanyl state of emergency.

“Heartbroken to see the increasing number of people dying on our streets,” Lurie said. “131 in our first two months this year alone. That is why today I am calling for a citywide fentanyl state of emergency to surge city resources to the drug crisis.”

Lurie called the state of emergency in 2023 in the Tenderloin by Mayor Breed failed and narrow and plans to appoint a senior level position to tackle the problem.

“My admin will use this emergency to implement the behavior health plan to ensure successful implantation a senior level position in the mayor’s office to coordinate the inter-agency response,” Lurie said. “They will report directly to me.”
