Severe weather threat diminishing overnight

May 7—12:30 a.m. — The tornado watch has been canceled for points along and west of the I-35 corridor, including Buchanan County and surrounding areas.

11:27 p.m. — The tornado warning for Clinton County, northwestern Clay County and northeastern Platte County has expired.

A tornado watch remains in effect for all of Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas including Buchanan County and surrounding areas until 4 a.m.

11:00 p.m. — A tornado warning has been issued for Clinton County, northwestern Clay County and northeastern Platte County until 11:30 p.m.

A tornado watch remains in effect for all of Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas including Buchanan County and surrounding areas until 4 a.m.

8:45 p.m. — A tornado watch has been issued for all of Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas including Buchanan County and surrounding areas through 4 a.m. Tuesday.

4:05 p.m. — A tornado watch has been issued for portions of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri until 11 p.m., including Holt, Doniphan and Atchison counties and points west.

A widespread threat of severe weather is expected to develop across Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas this evening. Here's the latest on the timing and potential hazards of the approaching threat:

HAZARDS: Damaging winds, sizable hail, isolated tornadoes

TIMING: 8 p.m. tonight to 2 a.m. Tuesday

THREAT LEVEL: 3 (of 5)

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to develop to our west this evening, approaching the mid-Missouri River Valley and St. Joseph area around 9 p.m. tonight. Any storm within the squall line could be capable of wind gusts of up to 75 MPH, hail up to half-dollar size and a brief tornado. Periods of heavy rainfall will accompany the storms as they push through, with rainfall totals of 0.5 to 1 inch expected locally. While heavy rain could cause local waterways to briefly rise, flooding is not anticipated to be a major concern.
