Sanford woman indicted for daughter's death

Apr. 24—After originally being charged with four felonies and one misdemeanor on Aug. 6, Hannah Katherine Powell, 31, of Sanford was indicted April 1 for involuntary manslaughter in the death of her 14-month-old daughter.

Court documents show that Powell was indicted for the death of Natalie Caroline Lawton. Her obituary from last August said she was 14 months old. She was the daughter of Powell and Michael Barry Lawton.

No other information regarding the girl's death was available, although her mother was arrested Aug. 6 and charged with negligent child abuse, alter/steal/destroy criminal evidence, drug possession and possession of methamphetamine, all felonies, along with a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

In the earlier arrest, Powell was held on a $250,000 bond. For the involuntary manslaughter charge, she was held on a $50,000 bond. She was arrested April 3 on the latter charge.

An order was placed in the court file for payment to victim Annette U. Hallyburton for $626 and to Edwards Funeral Home for $531 for funeral services. The girl's obituary lists Hallyburton of Mount Gilead as her grandmother.

Powell's next court date is April 29 at 10 a.m.

Byron H. Beasley is the prosecuting attorney.
