Remembering the victim of short-term rental shooting in North Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A shooting last week inside a short-term rental in North Nashville led to the death of a beloved mentor to many.

The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) said 31-year-old Barrington Moore was trying to keep his younger cousin out of trouble when the tragedy happened.

Those who knew Barrington Moore best say he was a one-of-a-kind man who was always looking out for young ones in the community, and that’s exactly what he was doing in his last moments on earth.

It was April 18 when Darrin Fleming’s mother sent Moore to pick up his 15-year-old cousin from a birthday party at a short-term rental on Youngs Lane. According to MNPD, Fleming was out past his 8 p.m. curfew, which was a condition of his probation.

When Moore arrived at the short-term rental to get Fleming, MNPD said the teen was hiding in a closet. Officials said the two fought before the 15-year-old shot and killed his older cousin. Fleming admitted to officers that he fired the pistol and was later booked into the Metro Juvenile Detention Facility.

Moore had a big impact on the lives of several students and held mentorship positions at a couple of Metro Nashville Public Schools.

Shelly Hood was previously the principal at Two Rivers Middle School where she got to work alongside Moore.

“He made such a difference in the lives of so many of our kids,” Hood said. “He would take our kids that were on the border of being out there in gang activity or doing things that he knew would get them into trouble, and he would mentor them and talk to them. He would just really come in and take over that father figure role.

Hood said his loss is devastating and robs the community of inspiring people like Moore who dedicated their lives to serving others.

“We need more Barringtons in the world,” Hood said. “We need more people with hearts like that for kids. We need more people to pick that up and take on that challenge. The impact that he made on these young ones will last for a lifetime.”

The administration at Two Rivers Middle School told News 2 they had guidance counselors available for their students the morning after the deadly shooting because so many knew Moore and were impacted by his sudden loss.
